Smith Lake, Then and Now
Spreading eastward from the Bankhead National Forest, this beautiful watershed habitat wasn’t always a lake. It was built in 1961 as a reservoir for Lewis Smith Dam, with the shared goals of increasing water and hydroelectric power to, improving the business economy of, and providing recreational opportunities for the region. Though it’s not yet 60 years old, the 21,200-acre lake has quickly become a beloved and seamlessly integrated natural feature of North Alabama.
Its unique, lightning-strike shape has created thousands of peninsulas and inlets along more than 500 miles of shoreline, ensuring plenty of privacy and easy lake access for all. Clear water and deep basins provide excellent fishing. The well-planned, family-friendly Smith Lake Park is open year-round for camping, and also hosts a number of popular festivals and events, such as the 4th of July fireworks show (which can be enjoyed on the water or on land). Public marinas, restaurants and antique shops have helped to develop a charming sense of community, here.
